Prof. Dr. Frank Rösl is a molecular biologist and a division head at the German Cancer Research Center, the biggest institution of life science and biomedicine in Germany. Beside his basic research, he is also working since several years in the interdisciplinary dialogue between Natural Sciences and Humanities.
He invited Prof. Nguyen Tran Hien and Dr. Tham Chi Dung to visit the German Cancer Research Center from 18-23 Dec 2011 to develop a project about “HPV - Human Papillomavirus infection and related cervical cancer disease burden in Viet Nam” with the following objectives:
1. To assess the cancer burden of HPV infection among Vietnamese women.
2. To determine the prevalence and genotypes of HPV.
3. To establish National guidelines for cancer prevention.
4. To provide recommendation for an introduction of HPV vaccine in EPI of Viet Nam.
5. To evaluate its effectiveness.
During the visit, Prof. Nguyen Tran Hien and Dr. Tham Chi Dung had also a meeting with Prof. Harald zur Hausen. Professor Harald zur Hausen, German Cancer Research Center, has been awarded with the Nobel Prize in 2008 for his discovery of human papilloma viruses (HPV) causing cervical cancer.
